- BJB> back on. The power supply made an awful belching/eletro-death sound,
-
- Basicly, no. I have more than that in mine.
-
- Supplies of this age are overdue to do something spectacular. The
- electrolytic capacitors dry out and loose their microfarads and/or develop
- poor connections internally. The poor connection makes heat, which makes
- the ageing process go even faster until there is almost spontainous
- combustion. When the cap fails, it usually takes the switching transistors
- with it since they are no longer buffered against the hi voltages, or are
- destroyed attempting to drive a shorted cap.
-
- We would all be smart to replace the big filter capacitors at the switcher
- circuitry input to preserve the rest of the supply. Unforch, those
- capacitors are not often locally available with suitably low ESR ratings,
- the super-super-super important specification for that job. So the new
- parts often die in 3-6 months from exactly the same phenomanon that took 10
- years to destroy the first set. I haven't replaced mine either, but I can
- fix whatever dies too, short of a destroyed transformer. And I have seen
- that! Or to be more precise, I've seen perfectly good windings on a large
- hunk of ferrite, all molded together with epoxy, but the ferrite was
- magneticly invisible due to have been warmed above its curie point. Some
- ferrites have a *very* low curie point, even below boiling water's 100'c.
